Measuring Your Children's Feet: Tips from SoleMates

How to Find the Perfect Fit for Your Child's Shoes: Tips from SoleMates

At SoleMates, we believe that every step your child takes is important—whether it's their first wobbly steps or running around the playground. That's why getting the right fit for their shoes is so crucial, not just for comfort but for their foot development too! Finding shoes that fit properly can make all the difference, and we're here to help you navigate the process.

1. Measure Both Feet

Children’s feet can grow at different rates than the other! When measuring for shoes, we always measure both feet and choose the size that fits the larger one. It’s important to remember that kids’ feet can change shape and size quickly, so regular checkups ,every few months, are key to ensuring they always have the right fit.

2. Check for Wiggle Room

When trying on shoes, make sure there’s about a thumb's width (roughly ½ inch) between the tip of the shoe and your child’s longest toe. This allows for natural movement and growth. Kids can sometimes be excited about new shoes, but it’s important to check that the shoes aren’t too tight or restrictive, which can lead to blisters or discomfort.

3. Consider the Shoe’s Structure

Children’s feet are still developing, so it’s important to choose shoes that offer support without being overly rigid. Look for flexible soles that allow for natural movement but also provide cushioning and arch support to prevent fatigue or discomfort. At SoleMates, we recommend shoes that balance support and flexibility, perfect for growing feet!

4. The "Thumb Test"

After your child has tried on their new shoes, we perform the thumb test (Pressing on the front of the shoe with our thumb to ensure there’s no pressure on the toes). Your child should be able to wiggle their toes freely without the shoe feeling too loose. If we can slide a finger easily behind the heel, the shoe might be too big, and too much room can lead to slipping and discomfort.

5. Look for Shoes with Room to Grow

Kids’ feet grow fast, but that doesn’t mean they need shoes that are too large. Choose shoes that offer a bit of growing room but still secure the foot. Shoes that are too big can cause trips and falls, so don’t go too far beyond the proper size.

6. Let Them Move Around

At SoleMates, we always encourage parents to let their kids walk around in their new shoes before making a decision. A shoe might look perfect when they’re sitting, but walking is a different story. Watch for signs of discomfort, such as dragging their feet, tripping, or avoiding walking in the new shoes altogether.

7. Don't Forget About the Socks

Always bring along the socks your child will typically wear with their shoes. If they wear thicker socks for school or sports, make sure you account for that extra space when fitting shoes. A snug fit with thin socks might feel tight when those thicker pairs come into play!
